  • caryatids: a contemporary interpretation: 'what she wore on her head'
  • caryatids have always held a fascination for me...but i never quite understood why?

this past year, in our mountain village on my way for morning caffe, i passed our lovely 12th century church as i do everyday. this day. however i stopped to revisit the ancient roman reliefs flanking the entrance way. most likely, they had been stolen from nearby temples.

to my amazement, i found beautifully carved reliefs of caryatids. women who were...'placed to carry burdens...after the men had been killed in war.' i began to sketch taking my inspiration a bit farther...hence: 'what she wore on her head.'
